Solar Optimus is a revolutionairy nano-coating designed for application on silicon solar cells. Its dust and dirt repellent properties combined with state-of-art efficiency enhancing optical materials make it uniquely suited to get the most electricity possible out of a standard solar cell. This breakthrough coating increases solar cell lifetimes while also enhancing performance, generating more watts per square meter.
Though the most common type of solar cells in commercial use, traditional silicon solar cells suffer from several faults that limit the light conversion efficiency - and thus ultimately their return-on-investment. Firstly, solar cells in the environment are exposed to dust particles that accumulate on the surface of the modules. Dust and dirt adhesion can block, scatter or reflect incident sunlight leading to a decrease in the amount of light that can be absorbed by to solar cell. This phenomenon - known as fouling - can have detrimental effects on the energy conversion efficiency of the solar cell.
The second mechanism by which solar cell efficiency is reduced comes from a more fundamental problem that occurs in photovoltaic materials. Light particles with high energies (such as ultraviolet light) are not converted to electricity but rather to useless heat. This light, while being very abundant in the radiation coming from the sun, is therefore lost as waste.
In order to reduce power loss from dust and dirt gathering on the solar cell, Solar Optimus is functionalized with antifouling properties that prevent adhesion of dust and dirt to the solar cell surface. To increase the conversion efficiency, Solar Optimus is devised with passive nano-scale optical components that convert high energy light into light more suitable for solar cells, thus increasing their efficiency. Solar Optimus is the first coating of its kind, containing both anti-fouling and efficiency enhancing components.
